Prime Minister Gilbert Houngbo, with the president of the UFC (opposition), Gilchrist Olympio, gave the go to the Opening Day of the Togolese army General Staff, on Thursday morning. This is the first time that the army had opened to the public; an initiative that is a part of the reconciliation policy desired by the government.
Once criticized, the army is now integrated into the society. It is no longer intended to punish, but to attend. The soldiers are indeed active on several fronts such as trail building, assistance to victims of floods and medical care in rural areas.
The presence of Gilchrist Olympio from the army is very symbolic of the opening facing Togo since the coming to power of Faure Gnassingbé.
Mr. Olympio had extensive discussions with various leaders and officials of the FAT. "To the Togolese army, thank you very much for their work. The army is an essential element in our development. It's important for us, political agents, to have reinforced our understanding."
