Bonfoh elected speaker of Togo's parliament

The former Speaker of the Togolese parliament, Abass Bonfoh, has been re-elected Speaker of the legislative chamber, in a tense poll marked b y the withdrawal of opposition MPs.

MPs of the Union for the Forces of Change (UFC) of Gilchrist Olympio and the Com mittee of Action for Renewal (CAR) of the outgoing Prime Minister, Yaovi Agboyibor, shunned the election, held on Saturday.Bonfoh, an MP from the ruling Togolese People's Rally (RPT), with a clear majority in the assembly, called on his colleagues to "work while respecting others an d sticking to the battle of ideas".

Bonfoh, 60, was the interim president of the country, from February to April 2005, following the death of President Gnassingbé Eyadéma.

He headed the National assembly from 2005 to August 2007.

The current bureau of the National Assembly has seven members, all RPT members.

The Togolese parliament has 81 MPs comprising 50 for RPT, 27 for UFC and 4 for CAR.
