How many Ivorian refugees are still on the ground of Togo? To find out, the authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched an operation, earlier this week, to register all those who live in the host cities of Avépozo and Lomé.
"It is essential to update our database to find out exactly how many Ivorians have settled in Togo following the post election troubles", said the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
According to UNHCR, 4,500 Ivorians have crossed the border from Togo in November 2010. Some have returned home since, but others prefer to wait until the situation stabilizes completely in Ivory Coast.
The new authorities in Abidjan have called on Ivorian nationals refugees in several countries in West Africa to return to the country.
