Togolese president seeks "successful" electoral process

President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe has called on Togolese in a nation-wide address to work for the "success" of the electoral process whose voter registration started Monday throughout the country.

"In the past, we faced difficulties pertaining to the organisation of harmonious polls because there were non-consensual elections neither upstream nor downstream. But we have all learnt a lot from our past mistakes and are now sufficiently aware of the mistakes or false steps not to be made any more," Faure declared. While urging the citizens to "mobilise" for voter registration, he said that the government consented "many financial sacrifices" and "took the time and precautions necessary" so that the electoral process be successful.

"This new situation, (Editor's note: 20 August Comprehensive political agreement having made possible the formation of the Union's government), naturally guarantees further convergence and much less distrust," he explained.

President Faure Gnassingbe reiterated his commitment to "refocusing on new convincing grounds for the establishment of an appeased democracy where the fundamental rights of each Togolese are recognised, respected and taken on board".

Togo's parliamentary elections, slated for 24 June, and then put off until 5 August, were postponed indefinitely.

The Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC), in charge of the organisation and supervision of the elections, is experiencing organisational and voters' rolls centralisation problems.

The parliamentary elections will replace the members of the national assembly whose mandate expires next October.
