500 Togolese peacekeepers in Cote d’Ivoire receive the United Nations medal

The Force Commander of the United Nations Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) , General Muhammad Iqbal Asi, presided over the award ceremony for the Togolese Battalion held at their cantonment site located in the Riviera Golf neighborhood of Abidjan on Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

Deployed to UNOCI on April 3, 2013, the Togolese battalion is composed of 500 peacekeepers.  It serves in UNOCI’s Abidjan sector.  As part of its military operations, the Battalion helps provide security at the presidential palace and also the Abidjan airport.

The ceremony began with opening remarks by the Togolese Battalion Commander and the UNOCI Force Commander.  Afterwards, the Togolese soldiers were awarded the Medal of the United Nations by the UNOCI Force Commander, the Commander of the Abidjan area, and the Mayor of the Cocody.

The ceremony was marked by a military parade, followed by performances of traditional songs and dances of Togo.
