The French Christine Lagarde was elected Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF),on Tuesday, succeeding another French, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, to become the first woman president.
The IMF faces a deep economic crisis in Greece, said in a statement that its board had chosen Ms. Lagarde, 55, without specifying whether this decision was reached unanimously. The group of 24 African countries led by Kossi Assimaidou (Togo), had supported the French candidate several weeks ago.
