Gnassingbe embraces opposition

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, whose party won the last parliamentary elections, said here Thursday his country's opposition would now get a status that would protect its rights and liberties.

The President, who made the pronouncement in a televised address to the nation, also announced the setting up of a national council for consultation and political dialogue as a permanent framework for preventing and settling political conflicts."The aim is to help the country end political..conflicts that marked the dark moments of our history," he said.

President Gnassingbe's message came a few days after the announcement of the results of the 14 October parliamentary polls, won by the ruling Togolese People's Rally (RPT), which took 50 of the 81 seats in the Parliament.
