President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo on Monday named Komlan Mally (47) as the new Prime Minister following the October 14 parliamentary elections won by the ruling party, according to a communiqué read on state-owned Togolese Television (TVT).
He was Minister of the City in the outgoing government and MP in the new national assembly.As a member of the ruling Togolese People's Rally (RPT), he also occupied the post of prefect of the region of the Gulf for several years.
The appointment of Mr Mally ends a long wait, speculation and jockeying for position.
President Gnassingbé announced a government of national unity following the election after holding consultations with the opposition.
He had face to face talks with Gilchrist Olympio, the leader of the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) and some people expected to have a Prime Minister from UFC, the second largest party in Parliament with 27 seats.
RPT enjoys absolute majority in Parliament with 50 seats, while the Committee of Action for Renewal (CAR), the party of the outgoing Prime minister, Mr Yawovi Agboyibo, has four seats.
