Togo's Gnassingbe pledges democratic parliamentary polls
President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo has expressed his resolve to ensure free and fair democratic parliamentary elections slated for next June in his country.
In his New Year's address to the diplomatic corps in Lome late Monday, Gnassingbe praised Togo's reconciliation progress and reiterated his commitment to maintain the rule of law, the enhancement of democracy and respect for human rights and public liberties.
He called on the international community to help his country get out of the socio-political crisis it has been experiencing.
He also lamented the persistent state of insecurity and conflicts in Africa and the world, and the trade imbalances between the North and the South.
