Togolese painter Paul Ahyi dies

The famous Togolese painter and sculptor, Paul Ahyi, died Monday evening in Lome aged 80 years.

A graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in France, Ahyi produced several masterpieces in Togo and throughout West Africa, notably in Cote d'Ivoire, Benin, Senegal and Nigeria.

He designed the Togolese national flag and contributed to the Independence Monument erected at the heart of Lome.

Ahyi, who had been mainly staying at home due to his poor health, was named "Artist for Peace" by UNESCO last September.

Ahyi was Officer of the Order of Mono (Togo), Officer of Arts and Humanities and Commander of the Palmes Academiques (France).

According to several arts connoisseurs, Ahyi's death is a huge loss for Togo and Africa, as well as for generations of artists.
