Brother of Togo president arrested

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe's brother was detained Wednesday as he sought refuge at the US embassy after a military raid on his house that fuelled political speculation, diplomatic sources said.

Kpatcha Gnassingbe, an influential member of Togo's ruling party, the Rally of the Togolese People (RTP), was held following an attack on his house Sunday night by elite troops. His detainment took place in front of the American embassy in Lome II where Kpatcha unsuccessfully tried to take refuge, according to republicoftog.com.

Soldiers stormed the home of Kpatcha in what state prosecutors said was a bid to arrest soldiers and civilians "suspected of trying to undermine state security."
