The Togolese President, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, Monday received various religious leaders in the country, ahead of the establishment of t he Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission.
The religious leaders came from the Methodist Church, the Christian Council of T ogo, the Catholic Church and the Muslim Society.The establishment of the Commission was recommended in a report on the 'national question' submitted to the Togolese authorities on 11 September 2008 by the Tog o -based Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights ( U NHCHR), Musa Gassama, whose institution examined the need for such a commission.
The national question, formally launched on 15 April 2008, is aimed at "giving T ogolese people an opportunity to express themselves before the truth, justice an d reconciliation commission".
A technical team, with the support of UNHCHR, travelled throughout the country f rom May to July to collate opinions and recommendations for "a national question based on truth, justice and reconciliation", following the socio-political crise s that plagued the country recently.
