China's state-owned Sinohydro has won the € 282 million construction contract for the Adjarala hydroelectric project (HEP) on the border of Togo and Benin, according to a statement by China's Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC).
The € 282 million contract was signed by Communaute Electrique du Benin (CEB), Benin's state-owned electricity company, and Sinohydro, in Lome, the capital of Togo.The 96 MW Adjarala HEP will be located on the Mono River, on the border between Togo and Benin. When complete, it will be jointly owned by both countries. Construction is expected to last 45 months.
The Adjarala Dam would be the second largest HEP on the Mono River between Benin and Togo. Partial financing for its construction has been offered by the Export-Import Bank of China (€ 24 million) in exchange for supply contracts, according to non-governmental agency (NGO) International Rivers.
In a statement International Rivers said, an undated summary of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) said negative impacts of the Adjarala HEP would include displacement of over 8000 people (75% in Togo, 25% in Benin), increased coastal erosion, and reservoir pollution from upstream factories.
