Togo Parliament approves budget

The National Assembly in Togo on Monday approved the 2008 budget which proposed a deficit of 42.45 billion FCFA. The budget estimates public expenditure at 307.62 billion and revenue at 265.17 billion F CFA, thus posting a budget deficit of 42.45 billion FCFA.

The budget proposes expenditure in the social sector such as education, health and employment, and support to the cotton sub-sector, phosphates and banks. The government said it was highlighting social and growth sectors to help the underprivileged segment of the population to fight poverty.

Provision is made in the budget for a 3% increase of salaries of civil servants, continued integration of assistant teachers as well as recruitment of more than 1,000 people in the public service.

MPs of the opposition Union of Forces for Change (UFC) and Committee of Action for Renewal (CAR) voted against the budget saying the review was done hurriedly and did not take the social sectors into account.
