Togolese parliament has passed a law that would allow women to join the military service, official sources said here Wednesday.
The former statute on the status of Armed Forces of Togo (FAT), crafted in July 1963, banned women from joining the army, air force, national navy, gendarmerie, military bands, or serve in the military health corps. The new law also provides for the creation of a higher military council (CSFM) and specifies the rank of Major as supreme title of the corps for non-commissioned officers for which the duration of the service is also increased.
